COLTO Member, Sanford Ltd, have announced their support for a Marine Protected Area in the Ross Sea via a press release this week: Sanford to back NZ-USA Ross Sea protection if tougher rules put on fishing vessels.
Sanford are a New Zealand fishing company that participates in the Ross Sea Fishery for Antarctic Toothfish, which is managed under strict environmental regulations set by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR).
A portion of the Ross Sea Toothfish fishery has been certified as sustainable and well managed by the Marine Stewardship Council, and has recently been rated positively by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Program.
